FROM GILLS ROCK TO DETROIT HARBOR

Departing from Gills Rock at the tip of the Door Peninsula the Island Clipper travels through Death’s Door amid islands and historic shipwrecks to Detroit Harbor on the south side of Washington Island. Along this nautical journey are countless views featuring the ever changing coastline, the waters of Lake Michigan, and historic lighthouses. Lake Michigan is the fifth largest lake in the world and largest in one country. Halfway to the island the Island Clipper passes above many historic shipwrecks in the area of water called Porte des Morts or as some refer to it Death’s Door. Porte des Morts is composed of the strait linking Lake Michigan and Green Bay between the northern tip of the peninsula to a group of islands with Washington Island being the largest. This area’s name does not come from the number of shipwrecks found here but instead comes from a battle in this region between the Winnebago and Potawatomi Tribes. Once in Detroit Harbor, our guests have arrived at Washington Island where they may rent bicycles, mopeds, or hop on the Viking Train to get a guided ninety-minute tour around the island’s most famous landmarks.
